Fine Motor Fun: Supporting Preschoolers' Development at Home

Easy ways to incorporate fine motor skill practice in your everyday routines at home.

Are you looking for ways to help your little ones build their fine motor skills? Whether you're homeschooling, looking for at-home activities, or just want to give your kids an extra boost, there are plenty of fun and creative ways to support fine motor skill development. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Build with Blocks

Building with blocks is a great way to develop hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. You can start with larger blocks for younger kids and progress to smaller blocks as they get older.

Practice Scissor Skills

Cutting with scissors is an essential fine motor skill. Have your kids practice cutting out shapes or following lines on paper. Just make sure to supervise and provide safety scissors for younger children.

Play with Playdough

Playdough is not only fun, but it's also great for developing fine motor skills. Encourage your kids to mold, shape, and manipulate the dough with their fingers and hands. Grab these FREE recipe cards to make your own play dough today!

String Beads

Stringing beads is a great activity for developing hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. You can use large beads for younger children and smaller beads for older kids.

Practice Writing

Writing is a great way to develop fine motor skills, and there are plenty of fun ways to practice at home. Try writing with chalk on the driveway, writing in shaving cream, or using a dry erase board.

Pick Up Small Objects

Encourage your kids to pick up small objects using tweezers or tongs. This activity can help to develop hand strength and fine motor skills.

Play with Lego

Building with Lego bricks is a great way to develop fine motor skills. Encourage your kids to manipulate the small bricks with their fingers and hands, and try building with different shapes and sizes.

Home Preschool

All of my preschool units are full of fine motor practice through fun, play based activities and art projects.
