Helping students make modern and cultural connections in US and World History classes through film

Artifact Justification
One thing I strive to model for my students is making connections. "This makes me think of that," is a common formula I use to help students start to draw their own connections. This activity I put together as a laid-back Halloween lesson complete with popcorn and candy, shows the skillful connections to the content I offer to my students. Noted as a favorite and memorable activity at the end of my student teaching, using the Barbie movie to guide thoughtful, reflective, responses from my history students is a plain demonstration of how I effectively engage students with the content.
What on the surface might appear to some as a lazy day watching a pop culture film, actually contains layers of meaningful connection-making that drive profound learning.
